Want to lose up to 57 lbs in one year?
Can't find enough time to get to the gym?
Spend lots of time in front of a computer?
If you answered Yes, Yes and Yes, then welcome to the solution...the Treadmill Desk.
Dr. James Levine of the Mayo Clinic came up with the idea of a "Treadmill Desk". The idea is to slowly walk on a treadmill while working at a desk built around the treadmill...a Treadmill Desk.
Dr Levine's research revealed that on the average his subjects burned 100 extra calories every hour while walking slowly -- at 1 mile per hour -- than while sitting in a chair.
Dr. Levine believes that if individuals were to replace 8 hours a day of sitting at their "normal" desk with a Treadmill Desk, and if other components of energy balance were constant, a weight loss of 57 pounds a year could occur.
Update: The Treadmill Desk really works! For 10 years I had been trying to lose 10 lbs with absolutely no success (I actually gained 5 lbs during those 10 years). After just four months of working/walking at my office Treadmill Desk, I lost 16 lbs! Now I have the wonderful problem of trying to eat more every day. Details below in "Is it possible to walk Across America..."

Hey, this is a terrific site!
You've pieced together quite an extensive look at the Treadmill Desk.
Congratulations on putting your own Treadmill Desk together - I have the same lack of functional skills as you, so I'm impressed.
Thanks again for the great information,

Jay,
Great work putting this site together. It's really NEAT to see other folks' treadmill desks.
I've had mine since early September '06 and have lost 32 pounds so far.
As a bonus, my wife is much more accepting of my time on the computer now :-)
Feel free to add the pictures of my treadmill desk to your site.

A treadmill desk is a very innovative idea. This eliminates the excuse of not having enough time to exercise.
I've been wanting to do this for a long time. Do you think a self powered treadmill would work? I was leaning this way to reduce noise in the office.
RE: self powered treadmill
I have no idea if that would work (actually I've never seen a self powered treadmill).
I really don't think noise would be an issue with a normal treadmill in an office.

You should mention the net runner on your site as well. I got their product and it is working great so far. and it was only $99. http://www.TheNetRunner.com
Net Runner looks awful. I can feel the carpal tunnel in my wrists develop just by looking at it. I like the quotes by "Bob Greene" and "Mehmet C. Oz, M.D". about "walking" is the site trying to imply that they endorse the product?
I would write off "Anonymous'" comment as spam.
Hi Jay,
I'm just getting into walking while working. But I thought this would be a great topic to build a social network around. I'd like to invite everyone to join me at http://officewalkers.ning.com/.

Just awesome. I must get one of these to combine two of my favorite activities. Thanks.
I've been thinking about a treadmill desk for a little while now, but since I program for a living the keyboarding speed might be an issue.
I recently ordered an alternative keyboard that might help called the AlphaGrip, it looks like a game controller and integrates a keyboard and mouse. Their site even has a movie using the keyboard on a treadmill.

I should get my alphagrip soon and see if it is usable for programming. If it is, maybe I'll try on a treadmill.

Does anyone know where the cheapest price is for the Sit-to-Walkstation by Steelcase? And if the price is likely to drop any time soon? I'm short and I can't imagine just propping something up on the arms of the treadmill--I can feel the damage to my neck, upper back and wrists just thinking about it. I'm also not handy enough to build something, and like the idea of being able to move it up and down if I choose to sit for awhile.
I know Shimon loves his treadmill desk!
Heck, if the health insurance companies gave us a break on premiums, we'd make them mandatory at work :)
I like this idea, but are we sure that 8 hrs. a day of walking is the solution to losing weight?
I would like to see some information on how long it would take reach that level of exercise and what you would wear to the office while doing so.
@dan You walk at about 1 MPH and burn about 100 cals/hr. I've been at it for about a month, working on my treadmill desk 2-3 days/week. I've lost 6 lbs so far.
You can wear what ever you normally wear. You will get warm, but not sweaty at that pace. Probably want walking shoes, but I think I could get by wearing my Comfortechs.
